State Auto Insurance Companies, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is a regional property and casualty insurance holding company engaged primarily in writing both personal and commercial lines of insurance. State Auto writes business in 26 states from Michigan to Florida and from Utah to Virginia through more than 3,300 independent agencies. The State Auto Insurance Companies are one of only 15 companies in the United States that has received an A+ (Superior) rating from the A.M. Best Company.
Challenge
In order to augment electronic business, State Auto provided access to Agentsite, a one-stop shopping Web site for agents and employees that made available real-time billing and claim information, historical policy information and agency reports created by netXpress. An integral part of this Web portal is the ability to do rating through netXpress. State Auto’s mainframe-based, legacy policy administration system was not equipped to handle rating via the Web. State Auto wanted to update the rating engine with Web capabilities without a complete system overhaul. State Auto wanted to determine if building or buying
a rating enhancement was more economical.
Approach
State Auto made the decision to buy versus build and conducted a thorough analysis of competitors in the market. State Auto ultimately chose Skywire Software’s rating, rules and underwriting system, Insbridge, based on its Web enablement, user performance, accuracy, scalability and ability to support rate versioning.
“Through Insbridge, State Auto has nearly doubled its Web business (both endorsements and new business) in about 18 months,” said Doug Allen, director of information technology for State Auto. “We have been able to quickly add more products and grow the business to stay ahead of the competition.”
